Freedom through simplicity
On the outskirts of Paris, Villa Savoye represents one of the 20th century’s most important contributions to modern architecture, and a definitive example of the International Style. Designed by Le Corbusier, this building is a striking blend of functionality, expressionism and technology, making it a timeless testimony to the ability of architecture to shape the future.
While Rene Hougaard, a designer trained in architecture, was sketching a range of coffee tables, his thoughts fell on the iconic villa.
“Villa Savoye is a textbook example of functionalism, and I drew inspiration from this time-honoured stylistic trend with the aim of creating a design in which visual appeal, function and construction all come together,” explains Hougaard, who works under the name ARDE.
The result was the Savoye tables; a range of coffee tables and side tables in different sizes and shapes, all exuding classic simplicity. The table tops are made of sturdy oak or durable ceramic with a natural and exclusive look. The table frames are finished in black powder-coated aluminium to add a contemporary, airy style.
The Savoye range is characterised by its unique modularity. Whether you want a single coffee table, a couple of side tables or a full set for your living room, the range allows you to create your own personal layout by arranging the tables in various combinations.
“Simplicity is a quality that provides freedom and flexibility. By letting the properties of the materials determine the design, we have created a versatile concept that is simple, functional and visually appealing,” Hougaard explains.
Highlights of the Savoye range include the state-of-the-art ceramic table tops. The decorative surface is resistant to scratches, heat and acidic spills, and is easy to clean using plain soap and water. Other defining features of the tables are the considered choice of materials and the rounded organic lines. With its exquisitely well-proportioned and understated design, Savoye lends an atmosphere of timeless harmony to any interior.
