Champagne comes from Champagne
In fact, the only difference between real champagne and the other sparkling wines is that champagne comes from wine region of Champagne. They are the only ones who can call their sparkling wine “champagne”. The region is located around the city of Reims, about 150 km east of Paris. This was where the classic method of producing champagne was invented. The bubbles in the sparkling wine are created by letting the wine continue to ferment in the bottle.
Cremant, Cava and the other sparkling wines
Sparkling wines from anywhere else may not be called champagne. However, as they are immensely popular, they are produced under many different names, depending on what part of the world they come from.
The other French sparkling wines are called Cremant. They are produced outside the Champagne region either according to the classic method or by using one of two other methods also used for champagne production.
Spanish sparkling wines are called Cava. They are directly inspired by a Spanish wine dealer’s travels to – yes – Champagne, and are widely produced in virtually all the wine regions of Spain.
The Italians, too, are crazy about sparkling wine, and even have more names for them. Asti Spurmante is probably the best known of these in Denmark. Prosecco and Franciacorta, too, are Italian names for their captivating sparkling wines.
Choose the right level of dryness for your taste
The various sparkling wines are also produced with different degrees of dryness, determined by the amount of residual sugar in the wine. The dry ones are those with the least sugar. The scale ranges from the extremely dry – called Brut Natural – via semi-sweet (or demi sec) to the very sweet (doux). In Denmark, the most popular varieties are Brut and demi-sec sparkling wines, which lend themselves perfectly to being served in these champagne flutes.
